A Garden Wedding at Kula Botanical Garden, Maui

Jan 15, 2026

Carson and Sarah’s wedding at Kula Botanical Garden was intimate, emotional, and full of personality. Set in Upcountry Maui, the garden gave us an incredible backdrop of greenery with views stretching out over the island. Clear skies and bright midday light brought everything to life, from the surrounding landscape to the smaller details of the day.

An Intimate Upcountry Ceremony

Before the ceremony, I photographed Carson surrounded by some of the people closest to him as they prayed over him. It was a quiet and meaningful moment before everything began, and one that stood out to me as I looked back through the photographs from the day. There was a strong sense of family throughout the wedding, and moments like this showed how important those relationships were to both Carson and Sarah.

The ceremony itself was intimate and emotional. Hearing Carson and Sarah exchange their vows while surrounded by family and friends made the setting feel even more personal. What I remember most was the balance between those emotional moments and the laughter that seemed to carry throughout the day. Their families brought so much warmth and energy to the celebration, creating an atmosphere that felt relaxed, close-knit, and genuinely joyful.

Portraits at a Kula Botanical Garden Wedding

When it came time for portraits, Carson and Sarah were a little nervous at first—which is completely normal. As we spent more time together, they became increasingly comfortable in front of the camera and their playful personalities started to come through. The portraits became less about thinking about the camera and more about enjoying the time together. There was plenty of laughter, movement, and interaction between the two of them, which made the experience feel much more natural.

Kula Botanical Garden gave us so much variety without needing to leave the property. Between the garden paths, dense greenery, flowers, open views, and the surrounding Upcountry landscape, there were constantly new places to photograph. Sarah’s dress stood out beautifully against the natural surroundings, and I loved using both the environment and those smaller details to give their portraits a sense of place.

The Feeling of the Day

After the ceremony and portraits, the pace of the wedding slowed down. Everyone gathered for lunch, spent time together, and simply enjoyed being around the people who had come to celebrate Carson and Sarah. There wasn’t a need for an elaborate schedule or constant activity. The day had room to breathe.

Looking back at their Kula Botanical Garden wedding, what stands out most isn’t one individual photograph. It’s the atmosphere created by Carson and Sarah and the people surrounding them—the emotion during the ceremony, their families coming together, the laughter throughout the day, and the playful energy that eventually came through in their portraits.

The garden gave us a beautiful setting, but the people are what made the photographs meaningful.

A wedding doesn’t have to be complicated to be memorable. Sometimes it’s simply about being surrounded by the people you love and having photographs that bring you back to how it felt.
